By law, Consumer Protection BC requires everyone who performs a home inspection to be licensed. So how do you go about it?
There are many different paths you can take toward your home inspection license in British Columbia. Watch this quick video to learn more.
The first step to getting your home inspection license in BC is to get trained. But not everyone can give you the education you need to not just pass your exam, but to become a successful practitioner.
In fact, there are only six home inspection training providers approved by Consumer Protection BC. And those six are not created equal.
Our training program gives you a solid foundation in building science. That means you’ll understand not just what to look for, but why it’s important and how it may impact the comfort, safety, durability or energy efficiency of the home under inspection. And that helps you reduce risk—to yourself and to your clients.
This isn’t the kind of knowledge you can gain in a weekend. Consumer Protection BC requires students spend a minimum of 150 hours studying under experienced, approved instructors before sitting your exam, then spend a minimum of 50 hours shadowing a licensed home inspector before heading out on your own.
The legislation was brought into effect to protect consumers and reduce their risk. For most people, a home is the largest investment they will ever make. They can’t leave important information that impacts their buying decision up to a fly-by-night guy with a clipboard.
Sadly, too many home buyers got burned by low quality inspections, so BC began regulating home inspectors in 2009, and raised the standards again in 2016.
Today, consumers in British Columbia get more peace of mind knowing any inspector they hire will meet a minimum level of competency.
We get it. We’ve walked a lot of miles in your shoes. We aren’t just training providers—we’re home inspectors. Back when we started in 1978, inspections were rare. We had to convince buyers, sellers and real estate agents that we could help them reduce their risk. Today, we have 17 inspectors in our company, and have trained thousands more across North America. That means you benefit from our 40+ years of field experience and delivery of more than 50,000+ courses and counting.
Our training program is considered the gold standard in the industry across North America. Our curriculum is used by schools, universities, colleges and associations, and we are endorsed by the Home Inspectors Association of British Columbia (HIABC).
